Recently a couple contacted me about their outdoor wedding in beautiful a clear roofed marquee in a spectacular part of Maleny (everything is spectacular up the mountain).

So they were looking for suggestions for a dance floor and I’ve seen lots of different ways of having a dance floor, some look good but are very expensive, while others look good in the pics but are not practical outdoors; at best a trip hazard, at worst a late night visit to emergency.

Outdoor dance floors look great on the lawn during the day BUT by 7pm the dew on the ground and dance floor made it too dangerous to even use it for the first dance.  A great slippery surprise for the kids that are still awake.  So make sure your dance floor is either under cover.

An alternative is to create your dance floor with lighting.  Use small LED lights to create a dance floor on the lawn using the natural grass as the floor.  Also it is likely your venue will have seen all the challenging options and should be able to help you avoid the costly mistakes that they’ve seen at their venue.

The second challenge was around where it would be best to put the dance floor.  Certainly the venue suggested where ‘everyone’ has it but, “We always put it there”.  Sometimes the best option for YOU is not the easiest or most convenient.  Ultimately your guests will dance in front of/beside wherever the DJ is set up and often that’s the best place for your dance floor.  It’s always a compromise but a well placed dance floor can make all the difference to creating EPIC D/Floor action later in the night!
