Good Questions to Ask a Wedding DJ Before You Book
Every DJ website says the same things. The phone call is where the truth comes out — if you ask the right questions. These are the ones that matter, and the answers that should worry you.
The Three Questions That Do Most of the Work
1. "Who is the actual DJ that would do my wedding?"
The most revealing question in the industry. If you get a name — and it's the person you're speaking to — good. If you get "one of our experienced team," you've found an agency, and the subcontracting economics mean your actual DJ may be earning half your fee with gear to match.
2. "Can we meet in person before paying a deposit?"
Any professional proud of their work will say yes immediately. The meeting tells you about chemistry, professionalism and whether this is someone you want on the microphone as your MC in front of everyone you know.
3. "What exactly is included in the price?"
Not "how much" — what's included. MC services? Dance floor lighting? Ceremony PA and wireless microphones? Backup gear on site? Two quotes at the same price can be hundreds of dollars apart in real value — the cost guide breaks down what belongs in each tier.
The Follow-Ups Worth Asking
- "Did the actual DJ answer this call?" — small operators answer their own phones; it tells you who you'll deal with all the way through
- "Do you offer a 100% money-back guarantee?" — and if not, why not?
- "What happens if equipment fails on the night?" — you want backup gear in the van, not 'ring a friend'
- "How do you handle our do-not-play list?" — the answer reveals whether they take direction
- "Show me your recent Google Reviews" — reviews are genuine; award badges are paid marketing

Frequently Asked Questions
What's the single most important question to ask a DJ?
'Who is the actual DJ that would do my wedding?' If the answer is vague — 'one of our award-winning team' — you're talking to an agency and may never meet your real DJ until the night.
Should we meet the DJ before booking?
Yes, always — in person or online, before paying a deposit. A DJ who won't meet you is telling you something. The meeting also reveals chemistry, which matters when this person will MC your formalities.
Are bridal industry awards meaningful?
Treat them as marketing. Genuine Google, Facebook and Easy Weddings reviews from real couples are far harder to fake — read the recent ones and look for mentions of specific moments.
What should we ask about equipment?
Ask what gear they use and — more importantly — whether backup equipment is on site at your wedding. Professional, maintained gear (Pioneer, EV, Bose, Sennheiser) fails rarely; hobbyist gear fails at the worst possible time.
Should we ask about a money-back guarantee?
Ask every DJ you shortlist: 'Do you offer a 100% money-back guarantee?' Watch the reaction. Professionals confident in their work will say yes; everyone else will explain why they can't.
What about music requests — how should a DJ handle them?
Your must-play and never-play lists should be locked in, with guest requests woven around them at the DJ's judgement. Beware anyone who won't take direction — or who'll play anything requested regardless of the room.
